This copy is bound in seventeenth-century rolled-stamped calf over wooden boards, elaborately tooled in blind with interlaced tendril and diaper borders, central panel with double-fillet frame, and two working brass clasps — a splendid and original Antwerp Jesuit binding from the Nutius press milieu. An unusually well-preserved copy, fresh and tight.

This handsome composite volume unites Books I–II of the official Jesuit chronicle, the monumental Historia Societatis Jesu. Part I, by Niccolò Orlandini, narrates the foundation and early expansion of the Order under Ignatius Loyola; Part II, by Francesco Sacchini, continues through the generalship of Diego Laínez. Both authors were professors of eloquence and historians for the Society, and their texts formed the authorized Jesuit narrative of origins — composed in Latin for internal study and for presentation to princes and patrons. Printed by the heirs of Martinus Nutius, the Society’s principal Antwerp publisher and close ally of the Plantin office, whose books define the visual identity of Jesuit Counter-Reformation printing.
