Historiae Societatis Jesu.1620

Printed at Antwerp by the heirs of Martinus Nutius in 1620, this magnificent folio of Historiae Societatis Jesu unites Orlandini’s Ignatius and Sacchini’s Lainius—the official Jesuit history of the Society’s founding generations. Bound in its original seventeenth-century Antwerp calf over wooden boards, tooled in blind with intricate rolled tendril borders and working brass clasps, it exemplifies the disciplined grandeur of early Jesuit bookmaking. The binding matches Antwerp examples recorded in the EBDB and Folger collections, making this both a monument of Counter-Reformation historiography and a superb specimen of Jesuit craftsmanship.
