In this dedicatory preface, Leonardo Bruni presents his translation of Basil as a humanist gift to Coluccio Salutati, explicitly framing the work as a careful selection “from the midst of Greece” for Latin readers. The address situates the translation within the civic humanist project of Florence, presenting Greek patristic wisdom not as antiquarian learning but as a deliberate cultural transfer meant to enrich Christian moral and intellectual life.
