One of the pleasures of the antiquarian book trade is encountering books whose significance is not immediately apparent. The four volumes illustrated below are not necessarily the most famous books in my stock, nor the most expensive. Yet each represents an important moment in the history of learning: the recovery of classical wisdom, the survival of ancient philosophy, the emergence of experimental science, and the systematic study of the natural world. Individually they are remarkable; together they remind us how ideas are transmitted, tested, and preserved across centuries.
