Three and a half centuries before artificial intelligence renewed the problem of representing human knowledge in formal systems, Wilkins attempted something audaciously similar in ambition: to classify the world, assign its concepts determinate relationships, and construct a language capable of expressing that structure without the ambiguities of ordinary speech.
